The Zilliqa blockchain has once again faced disruptions, with critical system bugs affecting block production on September 27 and 29. These issues have forced the network to temporarily pause transactions while developers work to resolve the situation.
On September 29, Zilliqa reported a bug that suddenly stopped the network from generating new blocks. At the same time, many users encountered difficulties accessing their funds through ZilPay, the popular Zilliqa browser wallet.
Concerns arose among the community, especially since a similar issue occurred just two days earlier on September 27. However, while the previous bug slowed down block production, the more recent issue completely halted the process, making it more severe.
Zilliqa Team Provides Updates
Responding to users’ concerns on X (formerly known as Twitter), Zilliqa’s team assured the community:
“The network was operating normally until another bug caused block production to stop last night. We are currently investigating, debugging, and working to bring the network back online. Stay tuned for updates.”
Ongoing Block Production Challenges
The team clarified that these recent issues are unrelated to the Zilliqa 2.0 upgrade, which focuses on improving network speed and cross-chain compatibility. The September 27 issue was resolved the same day, and Zilliqa confirmed at the time that “the network is now fully operational.” However, the bug on September 29 has proven more complex, and normal network activity is yet to resume at the time of this article.
Despite the disruptions, the team has managed to restore some network functionality for validators, and they are currently working on a permanent solution.
Quick Response Prevents a Potential $126 Million Exploit
Recently, a similar bug in the Cosmos blockchain’s Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol posed a serious risk, putting at least $126 million in jeopardy. The vulnerability, if exploited, could have allowed hackers to mint unlimited tokens on IBC-connected chains, such as Osmosis and other DeFi platforms in the Cosmos ecosystem.
Fortunately, Cosmos developer Carlos Rodríguez acted swiftly to patch the bug and prevent a major attack.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Network Stability
Zilliqa’s recent technical difficulties highlight the importance of ensuring network stability, especially in the rapidly advancing blockchain landscape. As the team works toward a lasting solution, users remain hopeful that these recurring issues will soon be resolved, allowing for a more secure and reliable platform moving forward.
Further updates from the Zilliqa team are expected as they continue to implement a permanent fix.
